Welcome to the Discover Weld web site - the web site that showcases the great people, places and events that call Weld County home.
If you are new to this site, thank you for visiting, and if you returning to this site, welcome back!
What is the common thread that runs through each of the featured sites this month on Discover Weld? They are all easily accessible from Highway 85 – the Centennial Highway: Fort Lupton, Fort Vasquez, Fort St. Vrain and Fritzler’s Corn Maze.
Weld County was originally home to four fur trading posts in the early 1800s: Fort Lupton, Fort Vasquez, Fort St. Vrain and Fort Jackson. All four forts were located on what is known as Trapper’s Trail, which followed the South Platte River. At these forts, furs and buffalo robes were traded for blankets, beads and other ‘Western’ items. While all four forts were eventually abandoned, visitors can still get a sense of what life was like in Weld County in the 1830s by visiting these historic sites.
Fort Lupton offers reenactments and numerous events throughout the year while Fort Vasquez is home to an engaging museum complete with Native American artifacts and hands-on exhibits. Visitors to the Fort St. Vrain Monument, which is now surrounded by private farm land, can get a sense of the quiet landscape that once was home to a thriving fur-trading business. The forth fort, Fort Jackson, unfortunately is lost to history (reportedly, Fort Jackson’s original location has never been confirmed but likely was built on what is now private property).
For 14 years, Fritzler’s Farm has been the site of corn mazes, pumpkin patches, and good old-fashioned fall fun…and, don’t forget, zombie paintball. Watch this year’s corn maze grow before your eyes in our time lapse and hear about the numerous activities you can enjoy at this family-run farm.
And, if you want more fall fun, be sure to check out Weld County’s other agritourism sites: http://www.cornmazesamerica.com/directory.php?state=CO
