THE RETURN OF THE PELICANS
I received an email from a friend of Discover Weld wondering where they could go to view the American White Pelican. Interestingly, just the day before I saw approximately seven pelicans soaring in a thermal above Windsor. The majestic birds are back, and Weld County is located along their migratory routes as they make their way from wintering in Mexico and Central America to their breeding grounds in Canada.
Did you know Colorado is home to more than 450 species of birds, and Weld County is one of the best places in the state for bird watching? Head to a nearby lake like Windsor Lake, Poudre Ponds in Greely or Milavec Reservoir in Frederick to view pelicans, gulls, terns and herons or head out to the plains to view lark buntings, meadowlarks, burrowing owls and many types of birds of prey. In fact, one of the best places to go bird watching is the Pawnee National Grassland, which is an internationally known birding area. Check out our Discover Weld video about the Pawnee’s self-guided bird tour (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCNorOjWbv8) and see how many different birds you can find throughout our beautiful county.
